Kansas City FreeSkool

Comments

Does anyone want to get together and start the seeds for a Kansas City Free Skool? I thought it would be as simple as slapping together a web site and calendar, but after further investigation it looks like starting a free skool is a little more involved than that. It will probably require a group of people that want to see this through, maintain a web site, get teachers, print and handout flyers, and help secure free spaces for the classes -- as well as people willing to think through the philosophy/vision behind the project.

Although some of the crossroads infoshop volunteers might be involved with the project, we could benefit from teaming up with others to get a Free Skool started. We are so overwhelmed with the radical library project, and becoming more of a community center, so we can't do this alone.  In the end, i don't see the Crossroads Infoshop as being directly related to the free skool, but rather, indirectly related by hosting some workshops and having some overlap in volunteers that will be involved with  both projects.

What is a FreeSkool?

The Santa Cruz Free Skool defines themselves as a "grassroots collective effort to create an autonomous, mutual support network beyond institutional control... a radically different approach to living and learning". Their classes are "informal, egalitarian, and are held in homes, social spaces, and parks". They see FreeSkool as a "direct challenge to dominant institutions and hierarchical relationships.  Part of creating a new world is resistance to the old one, to the relentless commodification of everything, including learning and the way we relate to each other."

Interested in getting a FreeSkool started?
If you'd like to get something like this started in Kansas City, then please send your name and contact information (email and phone) to crossroadsinfoshop@gmail.com. We'll be contacting people in the near future to arrange a meeting date and time with interested folks.

i need to know you really care so i can survive

I posted this the other day on my personal blog, and thought I'd reshare here:

i'm surviving. waking up. and discovering some deeper feelings. and now i understand why so many people get depressed and immobile when it comes to feeling the gravity of what we are up against in a world of oppression, separatism, and exploitation.

the scary thing is that our biggest enemy seems to be inside us. we don't know how to get along with each other. we don't know how be productive without hurting each other.

to complicate things more, everything we can do to change the world involves taking a risk and experimenting. we don't know what it's going to look like down the road or if the action is even worth our effort. it makes trying seem hopeless.

i wish that all it took was a snap of the finger, and that our radical projects would be completed and we'd have the results here immediately. but on second thought, i think the projects themselves are not all that hard. instead, its learning how to deal with each other. how to treat each other like decent human beings so we can move forward with our agenda. we're fighting a sickness that has overcome the human race. we are fighting, at times, a part of ourselves and what it means to be human.

but we can't give up. we are the only hope. so as dark as it feels. please stay focused. i'm not saying to avoid those dark feelings. i think it's necessary to grieve and cry about the situation. all i am saying is that i rely on you to make this new world happen. so i hope that you wake up and take some responsibility. we have to learn how to love each other and provide real support. quit joking around and teasing me: i have to know that you really care so that I can survive.
